Geriatrics Exercise
Older adults also need exercise as they have special healthcare needs which makes their medical care more complicated. Over half the adults over 65 years have 3 or more medical problems. These include heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, back pain and even high blood pressure.
A sad truth is, that as age increases there is a higher risk of falling due to numerous risk factors. Risk factors include poor muscle strength, poor balance as well as proprioception problems. These falls lead to greater problems due to risk factors such as decreased bone density.
Exercise can help! How? Well, by lowering the risk of falling, improving overall wellbeing and functional capacity, addressing posture, improving strength and balance as well as lowering the risk factors that are often found in older adults (including blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose).
