Hydrotherapy

The wonders of water! A swimming pool gives us the best environment for improving stability, muscle strength, flexibility and balance in a safe manner with minimal pressure on joints.
This involves the use of water in treatment of different conditions, which can include arthritis and related rheumatic complaints. How does it differ from swimming? We utilize special exercises and techniques that you perform in the pool, which help to decrease sympathetic nervous system activity. The vuoyancy of the water decreases how much weight the body has to hold when submersed and this in turn lowers the compression forces on the joints.
Just to make sure you are convinced, hydrotherapy rehabilitation also provides the following benefits:
  1. Improved mobility.
  2. Increased range of motion.
  3. Improved balancee and stability (the water provides extra safety against falls, so lets practice those movements that will help us every day!).
  4. A safe environment where patients with neurological disorders can improve strength and endurance.
  5. Enhanced proprioceptive input.
  6. Water allows you to be successful with functional activities (like walking) earlier and with less risk than if we just performed these activities on land only.
  7. Enhanced psychological mood. We eliminate a lot of the fear of movement due to the water.

Who will benefit from passive and active aquatic therapy?

  1. Orthopaedic population (back pain, injuries following trauma, impairments due to muscle spasms and decreased range of motion).
  2. Neurological impairments (strokes, brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis).
  3. Circulatory problems.
  4. Many types of arthritis.
  5. Lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
  6. Post surgical patients.
  7. Fibromyalgia.
  8. Chronic pain syndrome.
  9. Post traumatic stress disorder.
  10. Pre- and post-natal women.
